On the weekends, I love to get up before anyone in the house and head outside. Care to join me for morning chores? I'll show you around.
I head out the back door, where I have to step over Eleanor on the front porch. She wags her tale and joins me for my rounds.
First I go to the chicken coops. They are usually pacing to get out, ready to scratch and peck. I open the coop doors then fill up their food dishes.
Evie here is six years old, and runs to the back door of our house every time I open it. (I like to throw her scraps of tomatoes and fruit from the kitchen.)
I feed and water our little pullets, who are getting bigger every day.
After taking care of the chickens, I feed and water the sheep. This is Charlotte, the matriarch of our flock. She is a wonderful mama.
Once the sheep have had their breakfast of hay, they are let out to graze on pasture.
Finally, Eleanor gets her breakfast, and the chores are done.
Then if time allows, I will linger outside and watch. I'll scratch the chin of a sheep or watch the chickens scratching and pecking.
And do you know what? This is my bliss. I love to be outside, with our animals.
And if I happen to have a cup of coffee? Why it is THE best way to start the day.
So there you have it, morning chores for August! Thank you for joining me!
