Kitchen Alchemy

So much goodness is happening in my kitchen right now. Creating, transforming.

With late summer bounty still coming in, I made some time to preserve some goodness for winter.

I picked up 8 pounds of "seconds" tomatoes from a farm stand around the corner from our house. 

I gathered peaches from a nearby orchard.

I do believe tomatoes and peaches are summer made incarnate.

After much chopping, mixing, stirring, measuring and waiting, we have 11 jars of tomatoes and peaches put by.

Though they are small batches, I am so satisfied with what we have. Come January, I will be grateful for my labors here in August. 

The tomatoes will go into soups, and the peaches are a perfect topping for slow-cooked millet or steel cut oats. (I can testify that crawling out of a warm bed on a cold winter morning is made easier with the promise of peaches for breakfast.)

I also made a few herbal-oil infusions for our home apothecary cabinet. In a little over a month, I will strain the chamomile and calendula from the oil, then the oil will be made into salves.

Oh yes! So much good summer creating right now. I hope your late summer days are full and good too!
